2016 Australian of the Year (Tasmania) Conservationist
Jane is the Chief Executive Officer of the Tasmanian Land Conservancy (TLC), a non-for profit, non-government, environmental organisation with a vision for Tasmania to be a global leader in nature conservation. The TLC started from humble beginnings with only $50 in the bank. Since then it has grown to being one of the largest private landowners in Tasmania and has worked in partnership with landowners, governments, supporters and volunteers to achieve nature conservation across over 60,000 hectares of private land. Since becoming CEO, Jane has managed several multi-million dollar conservation projects, established a $10 million endowment called the TLC Foundation to achieve a perpetual income stream to steward the TLC’s Reserves, monetised a carbon initiative and facilitated the largest acquisition for the Tasmanian Aboriginal people on mainland Tasmania in partnership with the Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre, the Aboriginal Land Council of Tasmania and the Australian Government. Jane has a combined Science and Law degree with honours in Law from the University of Tasmania and worked in private commercial practice as a barrister and solicitor in Tasmania before joining the staff of the TLC in 2009, becoming CEO in 2011. Jane also volunteers to support charity organisations in her local community, primarily relating to governance, long term financial sustainability and capacity building.
