Tara Winkler is the Managing Director of the Cambodian Children’s Trust (CCT), which she established with Jedtha Pon in 2007 in order to rescue fourteen children from a corrupt and abusive orphanage. Tara has led CCT through a number of significant organisational changes, including the closure of the initial CCT orphanage in favour of a family-based care model of programs and services. CCT now works to empower Cambodian families to escape the cycle of poverty, assist institutionalised children to return to families, and help residential care institutions transform to a family-based care model. Tara now speaks out against the unnecessary institutionalisation of children around the world, fuelled by the good intentions of foreign donors. Tara has been featured twice on Australian Story and once on 60 Minutes, her talk at TEDx Sydney was the most tagged moment from the entire event, and How (Not) to Start an Orphanage, published by Allen & Unwin in April 2016, is her first book.
